Exam time per question calculator
Running out of time is one of the easiest ways to fail a certification exam you know the material for. Enter your exam length and question count to get a target pace per question and the question you should be on at each quarter of the exam. No login required.
Target pace per question
1 min 14 s
1 min 23 s per question with no review time. Keeping 10 min for review leaves 1 min 14 s each.
Clock checkpoints
| Be at question | Time used | Time left on clock |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | 20 min | 1 h 10 min |
| 33 | 40 min | 50 min |
| 49 | 1 h 00 min | 30 min |
| 65 | 1 h 20 min | 10 min |
How to stay on pace
- Answer every question on the first pass. If one takes more than about twice your target pace, pick your best guess, flag it and move on.
- Check the clock only at the checkpoints in the table, not after every question. Constant clock-watching costs focus.
- If you are behind at the halfway checkpoint, speed up on long scenario questions by reading the final sentence first so you know what is being asked.
- Practice under the same pace before exam day. Timed practice sets show whether your target is realistic.

- How do I work out time per question for an exam?
- Subtract the minutes you want to keep for reviewing flagged questions from the total exam time, convert to seconds, and divide by the number of questions. This calculator does it for you and also shows where you should be at each quarter of the exam.
- How much time should I keep for review?
- Many test takers keep around 10 to 15 percent of the exam time to revisit flagged questions. If you are a slow reader or the exam has long scenarios, keep less review time and use it on the first pass instead.
- Where do I find the exam length and question count?
- Use the official exam guide or your booking confirmation from the exam vendor. The figures change between exam versions, and some exams include unscored questions, so always check the current official numbers.
- Is ExamPro affiliated with AWS, Microsoft or Google?
- No. ExamPro Cert Prep is independent study material and is not affiliated with any exam vendor.
